So how eco-friendly is your mycotoxin analysis?<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Looking for the best solvent to extract aflatoxin from corn<\/h2>\n<p>Until the 90\u2019s chloroform was commonly used as extraction solvent for aflatoxins. Later mixtures based on methanol or acetonitrile and water became the preferred extraction solvents. <a title=\"Extraction efficiencies of aflatoxin poster by Trilogy\" href=\"http:\/\/www.trilogylab.com\/uploads\/Extraction_Presentation_Poster.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">This poster<\/a> by Bruce Malone and Carrie Maune from <a title=\"Visit Trilogy Analytical Laboratory\" href=\"http:\/\/www.trilogylab.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Trilogy Analytical Laboratory<\/a> gives an extensive overview of the extraction efficiencies.<\/p>\n<p>Yet these organic solvents impose an environmental burden, are hazardous and may cause problems with antibody based methods like ELISA and the widespread used lateral flow immunoassays. Besides organic solvents add to the costs of analysis. An aflatoxin extraction method based on water would not have these drawbacks.<\/p>\n<h2>How to extract aflatoxins with a water based solution?<\/h2>\n<p>Some mycotoxins easily dissolve in water. Aflatoxin doesn\u2019t. Like many other mycotoxins aflatoxin prefers organic solvents. In 2008 Chris Maragos from the USDA <a title=\"Journal of the AOAC publication by Chris Maragos\" href=\"http:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/23194241_Extraction_of_anatoxins_B_1_and_G_1_from_maize_by_using_aqueous_sodium_dodecyl_sulfate\" target=\"_blank\">published a method<\/a> in the Journal of the AOAC using water with a detergent (SDS) as an additive.
