Residuen en verontreinigende stoffen
Wanneer dieren die als bron voor voedingsmiddelen gebruikt worden, behandeld worden met antibiotica, hormonen of anabolen, blijven de geneesmiddelresiduen in het vlees en de melk van het dier achter. Deze residuen kunnen gezondheidsrisico’s voor consumenten met zich meebrengen.
“Residuen zijn de restanten van stoffen die opzettelijk zijn gebruikt tijdens de productie van voedingsmiddelen.” (bron: BFR) Deze omvatten veterinaire geneesmiddelen en pesticiden. Om consumenten te beschermen hebben veel landen maximum residulimieten (MRL) en monitoringsprogramma’s ingesteld.
Ons productportfolio omvat diverse testsystemen, zoals enzym-immunoassays (ELISA’s), microbiële remmingstesten en immunoaffiniteitkolommen voor de detectie van hormonen, anabolen, antibiotica en andere geneesmiddelresiduen in verschillende matrices.
Antibiotica
Antibiotica zijn natuurlijk gevormde metabolieten afkomstig van schimmels of bacteriën. Stoffen die niet in de natuur voorkomen en met moderne biotechnologie en chemische synthese worden geproduceerd, worden ook antibiotica genoemd. Antibiotica kunnen micro-organismen doden of hun groei remmen. In de humane en veterinaire geneeskunde worden antibiotica daarom gebruikt als geneesmiddel voor de behandeling van bacteriële aandoeningen.
Hormonen en anabolen
Residuen van hormonen en anabole steroïden in voedingsmiddelen zoals vlees of melk vormen een mogelijk gezondheidsrisico voor consumenten. Hormonen zijn endogene biochemische boodschappers die via de bloedstroom naar hun doelorganen worden getransporteerd. Naast natuurlijke geslachtshormonen kunnen synthetische steroïden en bèta-agonisten in de veeteelt worden gebruikt om de gemiddelde gewichtstoename en de vlees-vetverhouding te verbeteren.
Andere veterinaire geneesmiddelen
Naast antibiotica en anabolen worden dieren soms behandeld met andere veterinaire geneesmiddelen die ook tot residuen in voeding kunnen leiden. Deze geneesmiddelen omvatten fungiciden (gebruikt om schimmels te doden of te remmen), anthelmintica (gebruikt om infecties met parasitaire wormen te behandelen), corticosteroïden (een synthetisch steroïdhormoon dat diverse fysiologische functies ondersteunt), tranquillizers (gebruikt ter voorkoming van transportziekte en stresssyndroom bij varkens) en coccidiostatica (gebruikt voor behandeling of preventie van de parasitaire ziekte coccidiose).
Chemische verontreinigers
Chemische verontreiniging van voeding is een gezondheidsrisico en kan afkomstig zijn van verschillende bronnen. Een belangrijke bron van verontreiniging is migratie van verpakkingsmateriaal. Een voorbeeld van zo’n verontreiniger is BPA (Bisphenol A), een stof die gebruikt wordt bij de productie van polycarbonaatplastics. Via plastic flessen of plastic verpakkingen kan BPA in de voeding terechtkomen. EU-wetgeving heeft daarom een SML (Specifieke migratielimiet) voor BPA gedefinieerd.
