Zearalenona
Los hongos del género Fusarium producen la micotoxina zearalenona. Normalmente se encuentra en el maíz.
La zearalenona es una fitohormona que, aparte de sus propiedades anabólicas, tiene principalmente efectos estrogénicos. Debido a sus propiedades estrogénicas, la zearalenona puede provocar trastornos de fertilidad en animales con signos clínicos de hiperestrogenismo, un síntoma que, aunque observado frecuentemente en cerdos, también se ha descrito con frecuencia en otras especies como vacas, caballos y ovejas. El riesgo potencial para la salud inducido por esta micotoxina en varones a causa de su ingesta con alimentos vegetales o de origen animal se ha descrito ampliamente.
