FAQ – RIDA®SMART APP system solution for mycotoxins and allergens

The RIDA®SMART APP is R‑Biopharm’s smartphone software for quantitative evaluation of RIDA®QUICK lateral flow tests (LFDs) for mycotoxins and allergens. Please note that for bioavid, RIDA®QUICK Soya and RIDA®QUICK Gliadin kits the LFDs can only be documented.

Evaluation of LFDs is carried out either with a verified Android smartphone alone or with an Android device in combination with the RIDA®SMART BOX.

Please note that 2 different apps are available: one for mycotoxins and one for allergens. The apps are available free of charge in the Google Play Store.

No—evaluation is supported on android devices only.

The RIDA®SMART BOX is only used for imaging. The image is then evaluated by the RIDA®SMART APP. The RIDA®SMART Box is recommended in bright lab/field environments to avoid glare and provide standardize imaging. When using the RIDA®SMART BOX an android device is necessary (e.g. an Android tablet, an Android smartphone or a verified Android smartphone).

Yes, the evaluation kit is necessary:

  • For stand‑alone smartphone evaluation, the test strip holder and plastic cover are needed to ensure proper alignment and controlled imaging.
  • When using the RIDA®SMART BOX, only the test strip holder is needed. The LFD is placed into the test strip holder, and the holder is inserted into the RIDA®SMART BOX.

Mycotoxin LFDs (e.g., RIDA®QUICK DON RQS ECO) are already provided in a cassette, so no strip handling or insertion into a device slot is required.

Evaluation with the RIDA®SMART APP follows these steps:

  1. Prepare and run the LFD according to the kit IFU
  2. Place the RIDA SMART APP cover onto the LFD cassette This cover ensures correct positioning, alignment, and protection from external light during image acquisition.
  3. Position for measurement. You can evaluate the cassette in two ways:
    • Smartphone‑only measurement
    • Measurement using the RIDA®SMART BOX
  4. Capture and evaluation
    • The APP automatically detects the cassette, cover, and QR code.
    • A photo of the test bands is taken.
    • The APP calculates the quantitative mycotoxin result and displays it.
  5. Data storage and transfer
    • Results are stored locally or can be transferred via e‑mail, printer, cloud, or to the RIDA®SMART Universe.

R‑Biopharm is the sole provider of the RIDA®SMART APP smartphone evaluation technology, which is protected by the patents US9390237B2 and EP2923335B1, valid until 2033. This exclusivity ensures customers to benefit from a patented, market‑leading digital LFD evaluation system.

The APP allows users to perform LFD evaluations directly on site using only a verified Android smartphone—no benchtop reader or laboratory infrastructure is required. This makes testing quick, flexible, and ideal for field or intake environments.

The lateral flow cassettes and strip holders are designed to be sturdy and easy to handle, eliminating the need for fiddly insertion into a device. This minimizes user error and speeds up the evaluation workflow.

When choosing the stand-alone smartphone procedure, only verified Android smartphones are supported. Direct customers to the verified smartphone list on the RIDA®SMART APP Allergen product page and on the RIDA®SMART APP Mycotoxin product page.

No. Routine analyses can be performed offline. Connectivity is only needed for tasks like registration, syncing, or sharing results.

Yes—from 2026 batches onwards, customers must use the new RIDA®SMART APP Mycotoxin; the previous APP is no longer compatible with RIDA®QUICK mycotoxin lots produced in 2026. Remind customers to update before switching to 2026+ batches.

  1. Verified smartphone only (with strip holder + plastic cover)
  2. Appropriate Android device in combination with the RIDA®SMART BOX (improves standardization)

It stabilizes lighting and distance, reducing glare and reflections for reproducible image capture—essential when working without the RIDA®SMART BOX.

The QR-code (+ yellow window) is for correct line detection and the color frame is for normalization under different light influences.

Yes. While some mycotoxin LFDs require kit‑specific extraction, several are compatible with the RIDA®QUICK Mycotoxin ECO Extractor, enabling multiple mycotoxin determinations from a single sample prep—a strong efficiency driver for intake control and on‑site checks.

Results can be exported/shared from the APP (e.g., printer, cloud, e‑mail). For enterprise customers and key accounts only, R‑Biopharm offers cloud solutions (see RIDA®SMART Universe) with dashboards, search/filter, exports, and API‑based integrations; customized designs are possible for enterprise rollouts.

The system allows flexible, barrier‑free data transfer via Wi‑Fi or SIM card, enabling seamless sharing to printers, cloud platforms, or email. For enterprise customers and key accounts only, cloud access and customized configurations are available (see RIDA®SMART Universe).

Use the verified smartphones for analysis in darker conditions, to avoid reflection errors. Ensure the plastic cover is used for stand‑alone smartphone measurements.

Encourage them to keep the APP current; release notes include improvements like enhanced QR scanner integration and cover recognition that reduce support effort.

For one food sample: Sample preparation5 min extraction; Test procedure10 min incubation (total hands‑on ~15 min plus readout).

The kit contains the test strip holder and cover. It’s a starter/accessory kit required for evaluating RIDA®QUICK Gluten quant. The components of the evaluation kit are reusable and lot-independent.

  • With RIDA®SMART BOX: use only the test strip holder.
  • For stand‑alone smartphone evaluation: use both the test strip holder and the plastic cover.

  • No benchtop reader needed for on‑site quantitation with an verified phone.
  • Cloud‑ready with customization options for key accounts (dashboards, APIs, branding).
  • Backed by R‑Biopharm’s mycotoxin portfolio and established Food & Feed expertise; evaluation can be done with smartphone only or with BOX depending on the environment.
