Rapid allergen testing
The Lateral Flow tests (LFDs) incl. Hook Line from Bioavid are immunochromatographic tests for the qualitative detection of residues in environmental samples (e.g. in food production lines), CIP-water and food samples. R-Biopharm offers the new LFDs with included hook line for the five parameters almond, coconut, hazelnut, mustard and peanut – more parameters are in development!
To ensure that food does not contain any undeclared allergens, allergen management is essential in the food industry. The appropriate testing is carried out throughout the entire food process, from testing of the delivered raw materials to the prevention of contamination during transport, storage and production, as well as end product control. Lateral flow allergen tests (LFDs) are one possibility of analysis. These are immunochromatographic tests and are effective tools for the fast and reliable detection of allergen contamination in production lines, rinse water (CIP), surfaces and in food products.
In addition to the testing of end products, LFDs in allergen management are mainly used for hygiene testing (e.g. testing of production lines, surfaces and CIP water).
A major problem in LFD analysis are false negative results due to high allergen concentrations – known as overload effect or hook effect. High amounts of an analyte lead to an imbalance between the analyte and the antibody used, thus preventing the formation of the necessary sandwich complexes. Consequently, the formation of the test band is prevented and false negative results could be inferred.
A major problem in LFD analysis are false negative results due to high allergen concentrations – known as overload effect (or hook effect). High amounts of an analyte lead to an imbalance between the analyte and the antibody used, thus preventing the formation of the necessary sandwich complexes. Consequently, the formation of the test band is influenced causing false negative results.
To solve this problem, bioavid developed rapid test strips that have an additional band, the so-called hook line. The hook line makes the overload effect visible. The attenuation or absence of the hook line indicates a very high content of allergen in the sample. This allows high concentrations of the analyte to be detected and false negative results to be identified.
For the time being, the new tests do not replace the previous LFDs without hook line from bioavid, but are a new, extended product offering with additional functionality.
