Die Verwendung des Breitbandantibiotikums Chloramphenicol ist seit vielen Jahren weltweit vollständig verboten. Als Alternative wird oft Florfenicol genutzt, speziell in der Tiermedizin. Diese Substanz ist zwar weniger giftig, trotzdem sind in der Europäischen Union Rückstandshöchstmengen (Maximum Residue Limits, MRLs) festgelegt. Diese Grenzwerte sind abhängig von der Matrix und variieren von 100 bis 3.000 ppb.
